Advice on getting into morphs!!!!!!!!!!!!

repzoo44 Mar 13, 2005 10:15 PM

So im ready to start working with morphs. This actually wont happen until later this year (if everything works out) or maybe even next year but I need some advice for when the time comes. Im not looking to get rich quick or anything silly like that but whats the fastest way to get into morphs? I have always wanted to hatch my own albino. At the very least I will buy a het male and just let time pass. I was thinking this though. What if I was able to buy a male pastel. Within a year(hopefully) maybe two, I could breed him to a couple of females that I already have. Then, sell some of the pastels and buy an albino female and het male. Then branch off to spiders. etc. etc. How does that sound. Any problems Im missing or suggestions. I would love to hear how you guys got into your morphs. I realize its not cut and dry the way ive thought it out but it sounded like it might work. Thanks for any feedback.

I would go for it if I were,I was saying almost the same thing, I hope to breed my normals 1.1 and some cal. kingsnakes this coming season sell all the normals and buy a Pastel male or trade all the normals or cal. kingsnakes for a pastel male. Thanks Scott Glover

Your plan sounds good. Try and get your hands on some possible het Albino girls as well, they go for quite cheap and some people will sell you the whole clutch of possible hets at a very reasonable price. Good luck

i have found it easier to start out with female hets, let them grow for a year or so then buy the male morph - since it does not take as long to get to breeding size. they should both be ready to breed at the same time then. IMO

I bought a hypo male in 2002 for a few hundred bucks. Fortunately they were at a low. Bought a pastel last year for under a thousand. Hopefully my 02 normal girl will be giving me some eggs from one of those.

I find it very important to keep my collection to a small number of unique animals. So, I plan on breeding my "cheap" morphs and using their offspring to aquire the other visuals I want, not to mention some sweet carpet pythons.

You can have morphs without spending tons of dough, and be a breeder of great snakes without hoarding normal girls and buying hets hets hets. It just takes a much longer time this way. It's fine by me.

I got some het males first too since A) they are less expensive and B) I'm not in some race to produce them, I like the normals too! I would agree though that finding poss het females would be a good plan. I have a young het pied male and loaned out my one female that was breeding size this year to a friend with a het pied male so that we can split the babies wich will be 50% het pied, all the females I get will be kept back and bred eventually to my het male wich will be big enough by then hopefully prove some of the females out. I am also purchasing a male pastel this year that is 50% het orange ghost that I got a good price on. I will have at least 5 with a max I think of 9 females that will be breeding size this year and I'm planning on 5 of them going to the pastel and if I get more than that breeding size I will pair them up with the het males.
