Sterilizing tanks after the loss of sick leos?

AlteredMind99 Mar 14, 2005 09:33 AM

Well...after talking with my vet we have decided it would be best to euthanize at least one of my baby leos, and possibly the other one. They still will not eat and have lost so much weight it is disgusting, my vet believes the damage caused by the parasites to their insides may be too much to recover from, especially at such a young age.

Im so upset

I have an appointment in a couple days for the worse off of the two to be euthanized....

My question is how do i steralize his tank? I do not want to suffer this problem again. I was going to trash all the things that had been in the tank. Does a water/bleach solution work well?

TIA for your responses....

Here is a pic of the little guy i am talking about. Based on his physical apperance (he is about 3months old) do you think there is any chance of recovery?

A quick brief:

I have been batteling parasites with them for 2 months, still will not eat, obviously a significant weight loss. I have been force feeding him daily, and he takes it but still no weight gain. They have been dewormed 3 times.

Tank specs:

20g L tank
Reptile Carpet
High temps: 92
Low temps: 75
Nighttime temps: 70-73
Water dish, two hides, calcium/worm dish

are they still relatively active or are they lethargic?

Well the worse off one is extremely lethargic, head down, eyes closed all the time. He only moves when i pick him up to feed him. Very occasionally i have caught him out of his hide at night. The "stronger" of the two is a bit more active, not in the sense that he runs around or anything but he holds himself up, opens his eyes, and looks alert for the most part.

I dont want to have them put down, i just dont want to force them to live if they're too far gone already, you know?

any thoughts?

ive delt with a few sick reptiles never geckos though. it sounds like the weeker of the two is too far gone like you said. i would go through with it for that one. but i would wait it out for the other one. if hes still opening his eyes and walking around i think he still has a chance. good luck and sorry your going through this. i hope the the other one makes it. -brandy
