Helix heat panels, 2 questions, please respond asap

Gatorgal Mar 14, 2005 01:39 PM

Hello!
I'm unaware of the sizes/wattages available, however would one of these panels be sufficent to heat one end of the cage of an 8' burm cage with a height of 18"?

Also, and more importantly, where can I order these online other than LLL? Last I checked LLL won't ship to Canada, hence the problem LoL. Any help greatly appreciated! Thanks!

oh, and i'd also reccomend to call up pro products (www.pro-products.com) and get a price on one of theirs. I have both helix and pro panels, and the pro panels are a LOT better. If you get a helix panel, expect 2-3 weeks of outgassing before it can be used.

I have never had a Helix RHP. By better I'm guessing you mean it has cooler surface temperatures yet still heats the same XX inches below?

That's what has been posted here before by people with both.

I have a strong preference for ProProducts even though I'm not currently using any of their panels, or any panel for that matter. Need to get cages built first, LOL.

i have a helix rhp and it works awesome ive heard bad things about pro pro-products burnning out so i went with helix and it works perfectly and mine only took less than a week to outgas and my bad it was helixcontrols.com no space in between

They really both seem to get to the same surface temp, I just like the way the pro panel is built, and the way its attached a lot better than the helix. Helix is all plastic with a FRP faceplate. Mine were really fresh, so it took me a good 3 weeks to offgas these suckers. They have a plastic lip that goes around them also, which my snakes enjoy clinbing on. I'm afraid once my snakes fully grow, they will be so heavy that they'll rip the rhp from the ceiling. Also the pro panel bolts directly to the ceiling, the helix has 2 little things you screw up and slip the rhp into, then it's held up by the plastic. Not as sturdy at all.

I tried drilling some holes on that lip that comes out, then using washers and longer screws to hold one up, but it didn't seem to work too well. I'll have to modify it a little more in the near future.

My main problem with the helix is the outgassing. it's a pain in the butt and uses a lot of electricity (costs a lot of $$ on (3) 100 watt panels. During that month, the electricity bill jumped $50 extra. I blame the heaters for taking $20 of that, the rest was with the heaters I had running to keep the temps up in the garage to set the stain/polycrylic.)

If I had to do it again, i'd just order all pro panels.
