My baby cham. is shedding.

nez02 Mar 14, 2005 02:16 PM

Hey guys my baby started shedding. I noticed it when I woke up. I noticed last night he looked a little wrinkely and kinda dull but just thought it was me. My question is what do I need to watch for. Should I run my humidifier more to keep the humidity up longer? Should I spray the cage more? Hes eating about 5 crickets a day, and drinking from his dripper and when I mist. The humidity is about a constant 40 ish until the humidifier comes on then it goes up to about 70. I have the humdifier running 4 times a day for 15 min. Ill post a pic of him here soon.

Thanks
Nez

Hi Nez,

they shed quite frequently when young, which is a reminder of their fast growth rate. I would mist a bit more often with hot water (cools when it hits the air) with a fine/gentle mist. He will shed quickly - probably (they have more "spotty" sheds when they are older). The only thing to watch for is that there are no left over pieces that can constrict - such as, joints or tail. If any skin completely encircles, say an ankle, it will cut off circulation as he grows, but if the humidity if high enough you shouldn't have any problems. Do NOT pull any skin off, it will fall when it is ready

Hes done it took him about 7 hours. How often should I expect him to shed when he is small?

Thanks for the help.

yeah, it's pretty quick! When I had my pygmy chams I would look at Bart shedding, look back and he was all done! LOL!!

No set number but it will be frequent. When I got Luna at 4 months she shed every couple weeks, then once a month and now couple times a year.

Don;t recall all your threads - did you get his calcium/D3 dusting squared away? This is when they can get into trouble b/c thier bones are growing rapidly and they need enough Ca to keep up or might develop MBD. Also need to not overdue it as Hypercalcemia can a problem, too.

Yea im dusting daily very lightly with herpcare cricket dust. And gut loading with carrots and oranges until my cricket feed gets here. What else can I feed him with him being so small. I dont want to deal with fruit flies in the house. But other than that I dont care.

Thanks,
Nez

Nez,

What species is your Chameleon? It looks just like the one I recently picked up.

Mine was sold as a capitive bred Senegal at a local reptile show. Mine is doing real well so far.

Its a veiled chameleon. Let me know how yours holds up. They were selling those a couple tables down from where I bought mine.

Thanks
Nez
