How much yogurt?

ig_daddy Mar 14, 2005 04:00 PM

I have an iguana that is between treatments of Panacur, to rid her of parasites. I have a bottle of Nutribac ordered, but I don't want to wait to replenish her gut flora. How much active culture yogurt should I give, and for how many days after each round of Panacur? Thanks.

I don't know the scientifically correct answer, but I've done what you are asking about.

I took the capsule apart and poured a small amount into a spoon. I had another spoon ready with 1.5 cc of 95 F water, added the culture to the water, and stirred with a toothpick until it looked fairly well mixed. Then I sucked some up into a one-cc syringe and fed it to the lizard.

It made sense to me to feed the flora booster halfway between doses during medicine dosing. When the dosing was over I dosed for five consecutive days and all seemed to turn out well.

You can get gut flora that is specifically designed for birds and lizards. My present very high tech herp vet gives me a product called Probicin paste in a syringe, which is balanced for birds, but the vet says is great for lizards. So that is what I use now. Maybe your vet can get some.

Oh. You are asking about yogurt. I think it's pretty harmless, which gives you a wider range of dosings. IMO for small iguanas two cc per day. For grown 5 cc per day. That ought to get things started and help overpower any bad gut organisnms that may be in there, for the time being.

Thank you for your reply. We have given Iggi about a teaspoon of yogurt (plain with active cultures) for 3 days now. A bottle of Nutribac will be here soon by UPS. The manufacturer claims it is the only probiotic specifically designed for reptiles and amphibians. I hope it works to improve her appetite. We are spoon feeding her pureed turnips and vegetables.
