hey everyone havent been on in a while 1 tail rot question

ike66 Mar 14, 2005 06:48 PM

hey everyone i havet been here for a while all my animals have been doning great cept my ball pythons both died but thats beside the point. My question is my 2 malis are both missing spines from there tails here or there andthe male has been going through a shed and it seems he lost 1 or 2 more spikes from his tail. I never put water in the cage so im not sure if this is normal or if somehow he might have gotten tail rot?

i have never had to deal with tail rot, but do you ever soak your lizards? if you do and then stick them back in the cage without drying their tails, that can also lead to tail rot. i tried to look up a picture but i found nothing but i thought it was kind of black and gooey looking (maybe that is an extreme case). do they happen to have stuck sheds that could be making the spikes fall off? if you really think it is tail rot a trip to the vet is a really good idea.
i hope your babes feel better soon and i love their names

hi!, when i first got my uros they were in the same cage. thats how the previous owner kept them. and one had spikes missing from fighting. is it possible that the female is beating up on the male? also i have seen a case of tale rot somewhere i cant remember where but there were spikes missing and the tail looked like it had black splotches on it. -brandy

ive never really seen them fighting and ive only soaked them once and dried their tails and the east of them before putting them back in the cage. But they do seem to have trouble shedding mostly on their tails. Maybe thet is the problem. I didnt think it was tail rot because ive seen i t before too and it was like you said black and goey looking. but i wasnt sure if only bad cases looked like tha tor not .

well you can always try rubbing mineral oil on their stubborn spikes. you can usually find it in the laxative aisle at a drug store, but it is not a laxative in the sense that it has medicine in it. it is like liquid vasoline.
just keep an eye on their tails because the mineral oil will help keep in moisture and if they really do have tail rot, it could exacerbate thing
