Be very cautious when using analog gauges like this. They aren't all that reliable and after being in use for months the needles can start sticking in one spot rather than react to actual changes in humidity. Get more than one so you can compare them or test them regularly by drying them out and then putting them in your shower while you are using it. They are better than nothing, but electronic digital humidity gauges that are designed to to monitor rooms are better built, more accurate, and tend to last longer. You can find them at Radio Shack and at home improvement stores or catalogs. As important as humidity is to chams, they are worth a few more dollars.

That was my concern about those gauges from the petstores. How much do those digital humidity gauges normally run? Do you have any recommedations on which to get?

I have used several different brands over the years and they all seemed to work OK. The biggest difference was electronic/digital versus analog pet shop types. I haven't bought on in a while so don't recall the prices...about $20 should get a decent one. To get a super accurate, super quick one will mean a lot more $$ and probably isn't necessary unless you are a gadget lover like me. Check with herp suppliers such as LLLReptile, Big Apple, ProExotics, Pondside Herp supply, Radio Shack often has some. Holmes, who makes dehumidifiers and humidifiers has several models. Also do searches for "weather instruments" and you may find a lot. Many models combine with thermometers with remote probes. The humidity gauge does NOT make use of the probe, that's just for temp. If you go to the Ben Meadows catalog or to www.forestry-suppliers.com and look at their weather instruments there are several types of hygrometers ranging from $22 on up. One I use now that is fast and very portable is item #76255 for about $45. You can turn it on, put it where you need it, measure the humidity in about 2 minutes, move it somewhere else, measure, and when you are done store it somewhere handy near the cage. You don't need to leave it in one place indefinitely which means it is less likely to be damaged by water etc. over time.
