crtoon83...Coconut Husk?

apcages Mar 14, 2005 11:10 PM

Hello,

I was reading a few posts and came across your substrate article. Very, very nice. My only question is coconut husk, is that the same thing as bed a beast?

If so, have you ever seen it get impacted in an animals eyes before?

Thanks,

Mark Mertens

I don't know much about bed a beast, but I do believe it is ground coco husk. I've never seen nor heard the eye impaction... what happened/could happen? I've been told only great things by the people over on the chondro forums. I'm interested to learn about this.

Mark ,

I think they are the same product. My buddy runs a shop that use to use the bed a beast. He stopped using it and went back to aspen because he felt that the "dust" in the bed a beast was to problematic ( i think his worries were they could get possibly what you might have had happen build up on the eyes ?or in them ?) personally myself i havent used anything other then newspaper or paper towels as substrates for years due to the hassle in cleaning and replacing it it can create a mess

As it's dry it's going to be very dusty, but that part I use is all moistened when placed in the cage, and I keep it moist. I also use it for a chondro... who is never on the ground really, so there's nothing to stir up the dust that much. (except when he takes a crap the impact could, but i keep it so moist that little of an impact wouldnt do anything to it.) Also, since snakes shed the skin off their eye caps and such, how could there be a buildup in there? I can see how if this was used in a lizard cage or something it could but i think it'd be hard for a buildup in a chondro... but i'd like to see the data you were talking about.

Hello,

Thanks for the replies. I do have an interesting story about this type of bedding, but I will have to reply later tonight when there is more time.

Thanks again

Coco husk, Bed A Beast and Eco Earth are all the same thing. Eco Earth is by far the less expensive. Great stuff for hi humidity environments but not so good dry. I've used it with Geckos, Skinks arachnids all with excellent results. I've not used it with snakes though I could see where it would be a good choice for ETBs and GTPs. Maybe even for those arboreal Carpets.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

The only problem I have had with this type of bedding is with Australian Water Dragons. I thought it would make the perfect bedding for them. I gave the dragons a large tub for water, unfortunately they would drag the bed-a-beast through the water. I cleaned the water as often as possible, but after a little while our dragons started having eye problems. After closely looking at them, the bed-a-beast was getting impacted in their eyes. Has anyone else seen this before?

Thanks,

Mark Mertens
