Dumerils or Columbian?

reptilicus81 Mar 15, 2005 10:54 AM

I know a girl who wants her first snake, and despite all of my persuasive efforts she wants a large snake. I have turned her away from burmese and retics, but she has narrowed it down between columbians and dumerils. Money is not an issue for her, so what is a better choice?
Thanks,
Amy

Get her an Arabesque Sunglow Boa, if money is not a problem. That would be SWEET!

[haha]

I would consider, in all seriousness a Hogg Island Boa (They don't get very big) but it's a boa, and they get respectably sized, and they are very pretty orange grey and pink, docile sweethearts.

If it is between the two a Colombian is an easier boa
for a beginner. But there are many other snakes that have
a lot easier care requirements for someone new to the hobby.
How old is she?

I have owned both and both have their good and bad points. I sold my Dumerils and am now keeping colombian boas only. So i guess I'd have to recommend bci boas. If she is worried about size, have her get a male colombian. Males do not get as big as a female. I also think it's better to get a baby and raise it up as compared to buying a grown boa. That way she and the snake can grow together.

I've kept both, and I really enjoy both species. IMHO, Dumeril's are a little more particular about their care requirements. Both are beautiful species. To get the best specimens, though, I'd recommend going through a private dealer that emphasizes quality. IMO, the difference between a CBB Columbian from a breeder and a farm-bred pet store Columbian is night and day. Also, check your local shelter. Lots of Columbians are waiting for a new home.

The girl in question is 20. She is a friend of my brothers. I am the queen of ball pythons and everything in between, but in my opinion a 2000 gram ball python is gigantic haha! She wants an impressive snake, and the bigger the better for her unfortuently. I have tried to tell her that a big snake isn't a big deal until you own one and are dealing with handling it! Oh well! So I am hearing bci, hogg islands, and maybe dumerils.

Any more suggestions?

Thanks!
