A/V question

BRYAN139 Mar 15, 2005 01:23 PM

Assuming you could handle the cost. Since crofab is fda approved, you shouldn't have to go thru all the paperwork to get it that you do to obtain A/V from say, the thai red cross, right? Can you keep your own supply with a prescriptiona and a healthy wallet?

yeah, thats the jist of it for FDA approved drugs.

if I take my Crofab prescription to the drug store and use my caremark card, will I only have to pay 10% like everything else?

Bryan139 Mar 15, 2005 03:52 PM

I thought about that myself. But, call it a hunch, I doubt many insurance companies would cover it. Especially outside of an ER.

That's a pointless question to ask on a forum.

Jeez man, what happened to your sense of humor?

AV on hand at a personal level. Aside from being either a facility, bona fide researcher, or etc. I CANNOT even apply for AV personally wise. No doctor will okay or approve my need. Is it the venom banks that some of you refer to as to having it in your grasp ? I saw this concept some time ago but is it centrally located and how does one " get to it " in the case of need. Say, if I was bit where i lived, is the venom bank assurance that that particular hospital will have the supply or be able to restock immediately. I guess what I'm saying is the venom bank/s for your protection or hospitals protection. Also I guess it is for the Zoos if one has to use their stock via hospital for treating ?

With a pocket full of cash and even more paperwork you could obtain your own. Either on hand or thru a doctor's agreement to hold it and produce it should it ever be needed. Check out this site, there's alot of information there http://www.venomousreptiles.org/

You need to find a doctor that will sponsor you.

Matt Harris Mar 16, 2005 11:48 AM

NOR is it a pile of paperwork. You simply need to sit down and fill out some applications. THEE, most difficult part is getting your physician to act as the Primary Investigator for FDA purposes. They, then act as the person under whose direction, the A/V will be administered (or else an emergency room physician who will act in their behalf).

The FDA/CBER is well aware that these anti-sera are imported for personal use, and are ONLY to be used in an emergency situation to treat a snake bite.

It's far cheaper to spend $450 to obtain a supply of the correct(AND NOT WATERED DOWN) exotic serum, than it is to risk HOPING a zoo will stock it.

We are hoping to alleviate this problem with the NE AV Bank, but as such, have some legalities to work out before its fully running. Ahhh, yes.....all you need to screw up a perfect plan, is too throw some lawyers in the fray.

I was talking about Crofab though. Do you still need to do the FDA investigations and all that? Seeing as how it is FDA approved, I would imagine if you could afford it you could have a doctor write you a prescription and keep it in your fridge, no?

Matt Harris Mar 16, 2005 03:40 PM

Most people don't get them though, since the stuff is so expensive and most hospital's have it.

The FDA IND# is only needed for exotic sera.
