Cham eating branch?

tassadar898 Mar 15, 2005 03:03 PM

I was observing my cham (sambava) and I noticed two things I found kind of weird. 1. He fires his tongue at water droplets. Ever hear of that? Lol kind of funny to water. 2nd was a little more disturbing. He fired his tongue at a ficus branch. He got angry that he didnt get it so he went up to it and bit a tiny piece off. Ever see this in any of your chams?

Sounds like he is looking for water. If Luna has had a "dry" day (like the dripper ran out and I didn't notice or wasn't home) she will attack the leaves. Do you see him drink regularly? How are you offering water? Even though veiled's are the only veggie eaters in the genus I am sure that others know that in a pinch moisture comes from plants. Just speculation (could be wrong), but in each case it was moisture he seemed to be shooting for - literally

How's little Dot doing?

Im delivering water by just misting. He drinks plenty 1-2 times a day. He wasnt going for the leaves though. He was going for a leaveless branch, it was weird in any case but I think he was just curious. Dot is doing great. But I have a feeling she wasn't 3 months when I got her, perhaps younger like 1.5 because she is still so tiny for the supposed 6 months she is suppose to be. She is only about 3.5" SVL. But she is becoming a lot more docile now that i put a HUGE ficus tree in her cage. I guess all those fake vines weren't enough foilage.

You MUST HAVE A DRIPPER. Your panther is not "drinking plenty" by misting. Please please for the sake of this panther chameleon PLEASE READ UP ON THIS CHAMELEON!!!! Go to Kammerflage Creations for their care sheets or any number of care sheets on this website and get a dripper immediately!!!!

misting is not sufficient. how are his poops? what color are the urates? If an animal is shooting at drops he really needs water. You need a dripper - is there some reason you don't have one? When you say he "drinks plenty" how are you gauging that? Water is the most important thing for your cham and, as you know, chams can take some time before showing symptoms and dehydration will impact organs - and his life.

Using a water bottle sprayer I spray the leaves 3 times a day. 2 out of the 3 times a day he'll venture the leaves and lap them up. A dripper is not necessary and its just way to messy and too much of a hassle. His urinates are SOLID white and his skin is never wrinkly. I spray the leaevs once in the morning, afternoon, and night usually a few more times in between.

If you are not using a dripper then you need to have a misting "system" or humidifier. I don't understand why you are resistant to it. My dripper waters one plant and then dripps into a catch basin I dump each night - no mess, no fuss. It just has to be setup with some forethought.
