Crtoon83 - old paint

chris_harper2 Mar 15, 2005 03:57 PM

Chris,

We moved into this house and there is a partially full 5 gallon bucket of Sherwin William eggshell enamel. The bucket is in good shape and looks new. The garage is heated and the previous owners said it never dropped below freezing.

Since I bought extra drywall and supplies for my herp room project I went ahead and framed out the only remaining unisulated wall in the garage. It's now insulated, sheetrocked, and primed.

At any rate, most of this wall is going to be covered with a workbench, shelves, and pegboard for my tools. I thought I'd use this wall as a test to see if the paint is still any good.

Anything in particular I should look for when I'm mixing up or applying it, if I actually get to that point?

Thanks.

Chris ,

Old paint will be noticeable when looked at . if its been frozen or in freezing temps it will become somewhat "chunky" and seperated rather bad. by this you will find all the mixture has seperated somewhat like oil n water .

As far as using it goes i would think it would be fine to use best and only way to really know is to you guessed it lol mix it up good and roll it on the walls.

And when ya get through take spome pics so we can see what you have been doing to the new place lol

I'd just pop the top off and mix it up very well.. 3 main things to look for. if there's a bunch of trash in it... just little pieces of twigs, leaves, hairs, dust, etc. Then look for clumps of paint.. that's if it's really old. The third thing you want to pay attention to is the smell... if it's got a strong ammonia smell to it, it's time to dump. That's really about it... as long as it hasn't frozen its probably good for like 2-5 years up where you live, but i've heard of people using it still good 10-15 years in the future.
