What is wrong with the bottom of Houston?

momto6 Mar 15, 2005 05:12 PM

He's otherwise getting so much healthier. He has been having the lower spot for awhile, but it was smaller. We thought it was from his heat rock so we removed that back when we were having the first problems with him.

We had paper towels at the bottom of his cage and just about 2 weeks ago started putting the crused walnut shells. I just can't seem to figure out what could be causing this.

Has anyone seen this before?

Opps! Just realized that I don't know how to put a picture on here. I'll go put my picture on ofoto, will that work?

Ok, I don't know if this is going to work. Ok, I think I have it now!

oh, get rid of the crushed walnut. they advertise it as natural and safe but it can be very deadly if injested. it can cut up their insides, so maybe it is cutting up his outside too. for his cut, you will have to put him back on paper towels. ointments like neosporin may be futile since he will rub it off. eve gave me the idea of using betadine or a generic (provodine?) and diluting it with warm water till it is about the color of tea and then letting them soak in it.

Ok, DS is taking the stuff out now. BUT, it's not the shavings doing it. We just put that in, probably more like a week and a 1/2 ago. He already had all of those spots. I just thought that maybe the first one was a burn but we haven't had the heat rock in since so I know it wasn't that. It's not cuts, it's more like...he's trying to leak from the inside.

so it changes in size and color? i was thinking that maybe the walnut stuff was aggrevating it more because i thought you said it was small till recently.
anyway, towards the top of the page, there are links to breeders yadda yadda, all really close together. one of them is the photo gallery. it will ask you to sign in, or maybe sign up since it is your first time, but use the same name as you always use on kingsnake. then select the appropriate catagories, find the upload button and you can store the pictures off your computer into the photo gallery. eve has better instructions on how to do this

I wish it would be the walnut stuff irritating it and I suppose it possibly could be but it has been there for a few months now. I didn't realize it was getting worse because I don't hold him as often as my son does. I just hope that the local vet can help him.

thanks!

I think you have a point on the Walnut stuff (that of course came recommended by the store manager). I asked my niece to pick up some sand at the pet store and she said that they told her to get the crushed walnut shells. Since she lived out of town we didn't return it.

Anyway, since he's back on paper towels, it doesn't look as bright and raw. It's looking a little drier now. So, the shells must have been irritating it. Maybe, I'll take another shot of him to show how it looks today.
