Atheris Squam....question

phobos Mar 16, 2005 08:26 AM

Hi Ophiofans.....

I just picked up two nice CB05 squams from Diamond Reptile Breeder. Is anyone aware of Adult Squams feeding on neonates?

Thanks Al

Well, whether or not the answer is yes or no....is it worth the risk? I percieve arboreal snakes to be more opportunistic than others just because up in the trees, how often does food come by them? These snakes are relatively small evolutionarily because a large arboreal snake would require a high caloric intake, and the food supply just isnt there to support it. I say dont take the risk of keeping them with adults I assume you have.
Although, I've said this a million times before, I could be waaay off.

Excellent point Tom...never thought of it that way but the logic is flawless...You do a great job when you're not excited

Here are a couple notes on cannibalism in arboreal vipers.

Bridegam, A.S., B.E. Smith, C.M. Carrett, and D.T. Roberts. 1990. Cannibalism in two species of arboreal pitviper, (Trimmeresus wagleri) and (Bothriechis schlegelii). Herpetol. Rev. 21(3):54-55

Pareti, K.S. 1994. Cannibalism in a captive west African bush viper (Atheris chlorechis). Herpetol. Rev. 25(1):17.

Hope these can be of assistance.
