Feeding Roaches?

chibicricket Mar 16, 2005 12:17 PM

I've been hearing that some people feed their roaches. Which type of roaches are these, cause aren't their exoskeleton's a little hard for the geckos to digest? I also went to a few websites to price them, and they are ridiculously expensive, like 10 for $24. Are they good for treats? And what are the nutrionalal values on them? Thanks in advance.

I use lobster roaches, they have a soft exoskeleton and my leos eat them up! The major drawback to lobsters is the can climb, but they reproduce VERY fast and I am saving over $80 a month in feeders (crickets and mealies).

What happens when one gets loose though? I just had 20 crickets escape after my 3 yr old knocked over the cricket keeper when I was feeding my leo last week. It was completely my fault, I went to get the phone, and the next thing I know, my cat was chasing them all over the house. But my cat luckily at a majority of them, and I don't see an escapee cricket posing a big issue. If a roach gets loose, wouldn't they multiply and take over the house?

If you’re careful they shouldn’t get out at all. I’ve been keeping lobsters for about 1½ years and haven’t had any get out. If you don’t want a climbing roach get one of the non-climbers. The most popular non- climbing species are orange head, orange spot, discoid, death head, and six spot. All of these species can be fed the same way you do crickets.

All the species mentioned above are easily digested. Stay away from hissing roaches though as they have a very hard exoskeleton.

Care sheets:
Lobster roach care
Orange head roach care
Discoid roach care

They wont breed in your house these are exotic roaches accustomed to the outdoors. For everything you need to know go to www.blaberus.com James runs that site and he will answer any questions you have. You can also post on the feeder forum he monitors that. Tell him firefighter2598 sent ya (maybe hell give me a discount) hehe.

most of the time when you get escapee they do not last long. the conditionsare not optimal ouside of there enclosures so they will most likely die. lobsters are great feeders, many say superior to crickets.easy to gut load and breed like crazy. good luck matt
