Sprocket surveying his domain

el_toro Mar 16, 2005 02:44 PM

I caught Sprocket looking manly today. His cage is within view of Bowser's and there's been a LOT of displaying going on. All three have been eating like insectivorious horses lately, too.

Wow, he's beautiful..I mean..err..handsome!
How old is he?

el_toro Mar 16, 2005 03:55 PM

I don't know exactly how old he is. I got him last fall, but I don't remember exactly when. He was slightly smaller than Leeloo then, and (now) clearly not full grown. Now he's slightly larger than Leeloo who I've had for a year and a half, and his head is fully half again larger than hers. I've not had baby anoles, so I don't know how long it takes them to grow up, so six months with me plus however long it takes to get nearly Leeloo sized, I guess.

BTW, what color is his dewlap. I have a very similar male (white dorsal stripe and all), now approaching 9" in STL, that apparently can control his dewlap color to some degree. It varies from bright crimson to a creamy white depending on his mood.

I haven't noticed if the dewlap changes - I'll have to keep a lookout for that. Both my current males have a coral red dewlap. My male I had years and years ago had a much brighter dewlap - vibrant crimson red. These guys are both lighter, with Sprocket's more subdued than Bowser's. Leeloo has a pretty prominent dewlap when she chooses to show it off, but it's closer to pink than red.

Usually, mid-dorsal stripes occur in more petite males. He may not get quite as large as one without a stripe. The one I have is a couple of years o;d and pretty robust, though. He is very close to 9" STL (with about 1/4" of his tail missing compliments of his larger male cagemate when he was younger).

Hello:
Sprocket is a great looking animal. He appears very healthy and alert. Thanx for shaing the "pic" with the rest of us. Have a great day!!!

Hey, great image Torey. That's a good looking animal. I had taken one shot of my brown Anole that I posted a long time ago and I haven't been able to get another inspite of the fact that I'm *very* much into photography. Bing just won't sit still long enough for a good macro. She bolts as soon as I come into the room. Maybe she's just high strung like me. :]

Once you get the anole in your hands they usually surprisingly settle down. It's most likely because they enjoy the 98.6F that your body produces. My anoles used to bolt when I stepped into the room but after spending more time in the room they have become acustomed to my presence. Sometimes taking pics of them while they're in the tank is harder because of lights or the glare from the glass.
