Wondering if I should be worried

jleddy Mar 16, 2005 04:49 PM

I posted here a short time ago about a little starving gecko that I "rescued" from a pet store here in town.
I went back over the weekend to check to see if they had done anything with the sick corn snake that I had brought to their attention when I bought the gecko, and discovered that there must have been another gecko hiding somewhere else in the cage when I bought mine, because they still had the sign up on the cage, only now the last remaining one was on sale. I asked to see what they had left, and there was another little albino female huddled in the corner, much the same way I had found her "sister" earlier in the week.
So now I have the both of them- they are tiny as well as skinny, only about 4-5 inches including their tail. I was also informed by the pet store manager (who sold me the second gecko) that I was getting a great deal since they were both tremper albinos (woo-hoo, guess he doesn't realize that I know how much pet stores mark up their animals).
Anyway, I've seen them eating, but they are extremely shy and only come out after everyone's asleep and all noise in the house is non-existent (yes, they are in a quiet, low traffic room). They refuse to eat crickets or wax worms, but will eat meal worms. I think the crickets may be too quick for them in their weakened state. I just leave the meal worms in a dish for them over night, and when I check on them in the morning, there will be a few gone from the dish.
My question is, how much should they be eating? I realize that they are tiny, and I'm probably just used to my 2 older boys who eat like hogs, but it seems that they each only eat 1 or 2 meal worms each night. They both really love their calcium powder though!
They're both deficating regularly, and seem to be drinking regularly as well. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but is there anything else I can do for them? Should I take them to the vet to be checked out? Or is that not necessary yet?
Thanks a ton in advance for your help, you guys are great!

sounds OK. I'd like to know for sure they areeating if you haven't actually seen them yourself, but if they are pooping and the poop looks OK, then, I guess all is well. And yes, anytime you have a new addition to your collection, esp. rescues, a vet visit is in order, if only for a fecal. Good Luck!
