housing questions

Hello All,

To conserve space I am looking to house some of my rat snakes in sterilite containers. I wanted to ask other keepers how they like them and how to properly heat them?

My other concern was I once read that the plastic is toxic to reptiles. Is this true or nothing to really be concerned about?

Thanks in advance!

I like Sterilite just fine. I have about half my snakes in Sterilite and half in various glass aquaria. While there is no doubt that glass looks great, I feel I can observe my snakes just fine through the opaque plastic. And when it comes time to clean tanks...especially the larger ones...I ask myself WHY I even still bother with large glass tanks.

I have used uth with Sterilite...no problem. I presently have all my snakes in a small room that we built at one end of the basement just for snakes. I have the whole room heated to a decent temp and don't screw around with extra heating any more.

I love the fact that, awhile back, I found some 50 gallon Sterilite containers at Super Wal*Mart for 10 bucks each.

Tons of people keeps snakes in Sterilite containers. Not an issue. If you're gonna melt breathing holes in them with a soldering iron, just be sure the plastic is totally cooled before you drop a snake in.
As for heating, I dont know. I keep my room at 82-85 degrees, so I dont have to heat the containers themselves.
