Rack Cleanliness...

SnakeSmith Mar 16, 2005 06:45 PM

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering what your normal routines are for rack/tub maintenance, etc. I have read that some simply use Nolvasan to wipe out tubs, water dishes, etc. I have also read that some actually wash, with soap and water, all of their tubs, water dishes, etc. on a regular basis. I presently do the latter, but was wondering about the effectiveness of doing the Nolvasan thing. If effective, it would certainly simplify things. As usual, your comments are greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Glenn

I alternate between each of them every other week. Elbow grease, soap and a spong go along way in getting out that occational "cement" poop (along with a straight edge) that simply spraying down the enclosure and quicly wiping it down just don't get. I know breeders that rairly if every wipe out there tubs and simply spot clean there enclosures when need be but I'd rather spend the extra time and money (bedding material) to ensure a clean and sanitary enviroment.....

Just my thoughts,

I know of 2 people that have clean enough tanks........and at least one of them uses warm water usually to wash tanks when they need it.at times some dish soap.........he hates chemicals around critters ........and has great success breeding.......*(yes one is me and yes the other guy does well breeding too.......real well.........).snake rooms are clean enough.not spotlessly sterile let's say........

I also know some other people with clean nice .,pretty homes and snake rooms and all.........they have alot of animals and alot of great success breeding yet get little amounts of production.........

yes there is such a thing as too clean......

yes if you keep a bird cage spotless the bird will die......

so why not snakes being too clean ........?.being a bad thing.........

.........people are so internally paranoid...........

..........***(yes quarentine and keep clean new snakes especially wild stuff.........yes clean and reclean all sick animals.........))..........(I have gotten to the point that if it is sick to the point I know it's a problem I throw it in the freezer and stop all problems right away...)

About once a week or so (I've been know to let this go to 2 weeks), I take my tubs out into the back yard soak them in bleach/water solution, hose them off, let them dry/air out, replace substrate, add snake. Every couple of days I collect my waterbowls, soak them in bleach/water solution then run them through the dishwasher and put back in the tubs. In all, it takes about 10 minutes of work time, costs next to nothing and bleach kills everything! Hope this helps.

skimp now and pay later...
disinfect on a regular basis, with a disinfectant of your choice and you can't go wrong.
