Sunglow Cornsnake Help...Please!!!

top5pin77 Mar 17, 2005 09:12 AM

Okay, my 2 snakes did there thing about 2 days ago, and afterward, for some reason, the male's hemi-penis is still out. The mulch that they are caged with are stuck to his hemi-penis, and it's getting me worried about him. So what I did was but him in a tuperware container with water to see if the mulch will release from him. Is that usual for cornsnakes? Can anyone give me some advice or help to this newbie when it comes to breeding, since this is my first time ever. Thanks!

Well, after you get it rinsed off, it should be wet enough to retract on its own. Keeping it in a litter-free environment will be best, and if it has some water in the bottom, that's OK too.

If the prolapse doesn't retract soon, you need to get some help. I have read from reliable sources, that sprinkling sugar on the hemipene will cause it to retract without harm, but I have never had to try it. I sure can't see how it would hurt to try, but the main point is to keep him as moist as possible, so that hemipene doesn't dry out too much.

Hope that helps...

soaking in sugar water works too, but giving the time it's been out, I would take him to a vet to make sure there isn't any infection developing.

I know on chondros it's common to make a paste out of sugar and water and apply that to the area, the sugar makes it shrink drastically and can possibly be pushed back in depending on the size. but after this time a vet wouldn't be a bad idea...

Yep...I missed the part about it having been two days since the prolapse occurred. Sounds as though a trip to the vet is in order.
