anyone know where to buy moths/butterflies?

jason1200 Mar 17, 2005 02:25 PM

I was thinking of offering moths/butterflies to my veiled. He's a super finicky eater. The only thing he'll eat is superworms, i've tried everthing. Does anyone know where i could buy some?

Hi there, my veiled is the same way. He is deathly afraid of silkworms, so needless to say I had 25 silkworms that turned into moths and he is eating those. Good luck!!!

You can also try hornworms (green giants) you can get them at the american cricket ranch. They will turn into moths if they don't eat them as larvae.

The hornworm adult stage is a hawkmoth, and pretty big. They also have big spines on their legs that might cause problems for all but the largest cham species. The hornworms themselves are pretty popular with all the chams I offer them to. They are green, soft, and a nice sized meal for different chams as they grow. But, if you culture them in full light they grow very fast. I try to slow them down by giving them more "night". Don't take them off tomato plants...the leaves and stems are toxic. Raise them on either the commercial chow or fresh tomato fruit.

Hi Jason,

If you catch any moths/bf (or their caterpillars)at lights, or any other way, you need to BE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT THE SPECIES is as many are toxic (monarch butterfly for one). If you chose to feed hornworms they need to be raised on the artificial chow NOT on tomato (or related) plants.

My suggestion would be to go with what feeniee and zenexotics with the silkmoths (you would rear them from larvae on mulberry or chow) or the hornworms, which are available form several sources.

For the most part collecting moths at lights is OK if you know what they are. if unsure post a pic and I will i.d. it for you.

As for being a picky eater you might try roaches or silkworms. You can also get flies from different sources (Kammerflage, Skipio's) and give them a try. Supers are high in fat so you should try to get him to eat others things. Are you cup feeding? Sometimes letting crickets free range in the cage makes it more challenging and requires your cham to hunt. Just a few suggestions
