Getting Albino

Triad Mar 17, 2005 02:46 PM

Well my mom's going to go meet me at Petco in about 1 1/2 hours.

I'm going to be getting an Albino Leopard Gecko since I have a normal Morph already.

I've got a 10 gallon terrarium, terrarium carpeting and an extra bulb and holder.

It'll be in my room probably, unless I decide to keep it downstairs with my bro (he has more room).

Couple questions: is the reptile carpeting ok or no?

Also is there any rule on handling baby leo's? They really just have baby leopards at Petco so I was just wondering. I know, more fragile than anything else so. I probably will just go in to feed and that's bout it.

Also what about humid hides? Get one now or wait until its bigger?

I used to use reptile carpet and i didnt like it bc when feeding if they would miss a cricket or worm there mouth would get stuck to the carpet and they would struggle then eventually get free so i swited to tile and its way better and yes get hunid hides now so they dont have shedding problems

Reptile carpet: I've never used it, but I've heard alot of negative things about it. Like Kfactor said, their mouths getting stuck to it(Dangerous because they can lose teeth, etc), plus I've heard of their little claws catching onto loose threads now and then.. Just use paper towel or tile.

Handling: Like any Leo, just like the gecko do it's thing for about 3 days before deciding to touch it at all. When feeding/watering, just make the least possible contact. Babies are skittish(Far more then the majority of adults), it's their instinct to look at you as a predator.. So the baby will take time to adjust to you and your tall stature. I almost get nervous when I handle a baby because they usually wriggle, spazz out, hiss, scream, etc, lol. So, just keep it to an abrupt few minutes of handling while the gecko is still young.

Humid Hide: Definitely need this. A Leopard Gecko sheds more during it's younger part of it's life then most other times. The lack of a humid hide would result in a kinked tail, loss of digit, etc. Soooo, you'll want one from day one.

Good luck, post a pic of the baby when you get it if you can. ^^

Pics are posted in the topic titled "Introducing Phoenix".

Kinked tail question: is that like when part of the tail is almost like bent off from the rest?

I'm going to be making a humid hide tonight so...Phoenix will have one shortly.

Very nice baby! Yep, a kinked tail is just like you said.. it's a small, irregular bend in the tail. Sometimes it's genetic, but other times the gecko didn't have a proper shed. I'm glad he'll have a humid hide, I'd hate to see your baby lose any toes.
