Feeding Tokays

tokayguy Mar 17, 2005 05:54 PM

I currently own two pairs of tokay geckos. My two larger geckos are about 15 inches and my smaller pair are each about 10 inches. My frustration is that I cannot seem to get them to eat anything other than crickets and hissing roachess. In each cage I have a feeding dish usually full with about 15 mealworms, and occasionally some waxworms. However my geckos seem very uninterested at anything except for the crickets. The only success i've had with feeding them anything but crickets is last night when my largest male ripped a hornworm in half and ate the portion it had in its mouth. I offered him another but he didn't seem interested.

I'm looking for some advice on offering food to them. Each pair is kept in a glass aquarium of appropriate size. My smaller pair is in a 30 gallon and my larger pair in a 60 gallon. Their cages are decorated with multiple plants, mainly pothos. i offer PVC pipe and cork bark to climb on.

I've found that Tokays are often uninterested in smaller food items such as meal worm and wax worm so I don't bother with them at all, but mine do OCCASIONALLY eat giant mealworms. Howevere I've found most sucess with locusts of different sized and different roaches. What are your actual concerns with getting them off the crickets and roaches?

Also have you ever tried pinky mice, many wont take them but others will... an idea for helping promote the feeding of pinkys is to squeeze the head of the pinky lightly to get some of the blood to bubble out of its nose, which yeah I know is not too pleasant.

Tokays can be surprisingly picky eaters but when you find their right foods they will enjoy they food very much usually, so just try around, my biggest sucesses really have been with locusts though.

my tokays love crickets. i've tried wax, meal and giant worms but they don't like them. they also refuse pinkies. but they like these big green catepillar type worms. can't remember exactly what they are called. they also like brocoli. my largest male loves brocolli. i had hundreds of baby crickets hatch in his cage. so i put some in there so they would eat and grow. but the tokay would come down and eat the brocoli at night.

Wow brocoli! My Storm will take mealworms only if I dig out as many large mealies as I can from my colony and put them in a small bowl to make a giant crawling mass. Then she picks off about 6 to a dozen one a time. I think it's the appearance of large prey that attracts her.

And she loves hissers too! It's too much fun giving her those when she's running around my room for the day. Set the roach on the wall, Storm scurries out from her hideing place, snatch, hiss! hiss!, run behind the dresser, hiss! hiss! THUMP aginst the wall! Hiss Thump! crunch, crunch! Peek out for the next one licking her chops!

Same with pinkys, but only live. I tried a frozen one and Storm chewed it and threw it back at me TWICE!
