Comparison Pic : Yellow Belly next to Normal

mlpetros Mar 17, 2005 07:36 PM

I recently acquired a pair of yellow bellies and was suprised by how much overall color they have. They almost look like an aberrant kind of pastel.Anyway I took a pic of one of them next to a normal female to show how different they look.I`m always looking at some obscure pic of someone trying to hold one upside to in order to see some yellow along the belly and sides. Also where did the name yellow belly come from? They dont have solid yellow bellies so its kind of a misleading name. Just curious... Mark BallPython777.com

What I find curious is that the yellow belly has yet to be proven no? And of course, determining what is really a yellow belly and finally, everyone is selling a proven yellow belly. I wonder if this is one of those obscure snakes that will produce nothing yet is being hyped to the point that everyone (or many) are clawing at getting one. Even RDR states "2004 is definitely the year of the YELLOW BELLY!!" and I don't think this was in a good way.

I guess the best bet, as Ralph states, is to get one from a proven line. IOW, one that has produced an Ivory.

On the optimistic side, I hope we can iron this out. I just love BP morphs!

There are a few people out there who know what these things are....There are also some reputable breeders that I've seen selling animals that are not YB's, whether it is their lack of experience in ball python morphs, nobody knows. Every larger breeder has a yellow belly or many yellow bellies in their collection. The general public is very confused about what they are because of people selling "look alikes" or animals that look nothing like them, but because of being uneducated about what they actually look like then this causes chaos. Chaos in the terms that everyone is skeptical of what is or what isn't a yellow belly. This is a real yellow belly. I posted this pic to help some of the people out there comes to terms of what these snakes actually look like. I hope this helps someone.

I know what it is, I am just curious as to what you are calling a Yellow Belly. There seems to be a high variation in the pattern of the overall snake as well as the belly scute colors.

Thanks,

I'm calling a yellow Belly, a snake that has the overall average charactersitics of a true yellow belly. Every snake does have a degree of difference, but for the most part they generally look the same.

They have yellow bellies as babies, sometimes called "lemons" etc...True yellow bellies have other markers as well that I will not get myself in trouble up here with lol. Hope this helps!!

This yellow belly phenomena has really gotten out of control as far as I can tell. If that many people out there can't tell what it looks like then why bother with them? I can see with the other morphs, they have such distinctive attributes which people love and that make them so pricey, but to spend extra money on what most people mistake as a normal seems a little absurd.

Ebonies and Ivories --- hence the high price!

Ebony and Ivory...................isn't that a Paul McCartney song?

Lets not forget about the Super-Striped Yellow belly

I thought it only produced the Ivory? Which seems like a dead-end. I don't mean that in a negative way but it's kind of like the snow. Man, I remember this forum when that was going on. It was crazy. Now look at it.

Its easy to understand why there is so much confusion around Yellow Bellies until you actually see a good example of one, then they are easy to pick out. Mike’s photo in his post above is a good example of what a good Yellow Bellies underbelly should look like …. And yes, its not yellow the name is just confusing. As has already been stated the value in these snakes is what they produce – when bred to a true Granite they throw Ebonies, with another Yellow Belly they produce the Ivory (which look even better in person) , with a Pastel they make some awesome looking Pastel Yellow Bellies and Jared produced the Super Striped Yellow Belly. This year you can expect a whole bunch of new designer morphs made with Yellow Bellies, we have heard of people putting them with just about every other morph to see what they produce. After this season I don’t think many people will be asking what the big deal is any more. Best way to spot the real thing is to go to a large breeder at one of the big shows and see a YB in person that way you should be able to pick them out … they are defiantly not normal looking.

Cheers, John

And there's another one. What is a true granit. I have a couple that look very similar to many of those I see for sale. Who has consistently proven the YB? How many are for sale from a proven line? I think there will be more disappointed people than happy.

Yellow belly x granite = Ebonies

Theres also a cross with stripes, but not sure what happens with that.
