Generally they are excellent starters. They feed very well, grow fast but not too big (Females much larger than males) and are generally very tollerant of handling.

While not the brightest colored snake they make up for it in hardiness.

Whos said house snakes are not brighltly coloured
......

Housesnakes make excellent beginner snakes, but I would definitley go with a female to start with. Some males tend to be reluctant feeders.

Who There Indigo! While that white beauty is impressive it is the exception-not the rule. Besides we are talking begginer snakes not really good collectors items.

I have a handsome pair of reds myself.

However, Compare those to a Mandarin Ratsnake or even a really good common corn, or some of the better gray bands, or milks and it just is no contest. Their color is just not that bright.

But they are handsome....

Of course you are right...Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. If you are refering to pattern, of course housesnakes are no match to members of the genus Lampropeltis, but there are few snakes revealing such a strong iridecence than housesnakes. Moreover good red housesnakes are a match to every bloodred corn.
I think they are underestimated in every way, but that´s just my opinion.
Cheers,
Mathias

Wow, that's a beauty!

I would love to see someone breed one of those screaming red snakes into the albino line. That might produce some hot pink housesnakes.
