California Gilas, just saw my first picture of one,,,,

lateralis Mar 18, 2005 11:08 AM

Dr. Delisle was kind enough to discuss some aspects of his discovery as well as the locale which will be added to my list of places to check. The picture was of an adult in a wash in april around 10am. The locale is rather far from the majority of places where they have been seen but since there are no movement barriers it makes sense. The habitat is perfect for gilas and as there are several other locales that are thought to be suitable as well, it wouldnt surprise me if I get a picture of one before the summer. Now if winter will quietly retreat and let spring do its thing, I can get to work.

While I read the good Dr's report several years ago & believe he was in the western bajadas of the Providence Mtns...I'd try the New York Mtns; S-easterly towards Searchlight.
I have fd a few in the Buckskin Mtns of Az immediately across from what looks like gr8t habitat in the Whipple Mtns W of Parker dam.
There is a record of a geeler from Winterhaven way back when too.

I'd concentrate your search during mid April-May when the quail/cottontails are sitting on the max number of eggs & young. You should also learn to recognize the distinct tracks these monitors leave in the sandy arroyos so that you can create a statistic; sign per 100 arroyos checked. Jpgs & GPS data for any good tracks would be appreciated by the biological community.

Our 1st of the year central az monster occured on 3.10

Good luck & do post your results. Cheers, RxR

Hi RR:
I had looked at those ranges too and felt that they were good places to check at the right time of year. The literature also agrees though lizards dont read guidebooks, LOL. The times you mention are exactly when I plan on looking, I routinely find AZ gilas in May down in Organ Pipe NP. I have seen one set of tracks before, they were not too difficult to discern, of course the trackline was in damp soil and gave an excellent imprint. I have GPS set up with fresh batteries ready to go! I will most certainly keep the forum updated, this is my Everest!

BTW, please dont mention any locale data on the net please, I know it does not point to thier actual burrow per se, but having any tips out there might trigger a stampede. Thanks, much appreciated. Also, Im jealous, only march and you already get to see gilas. I love AZ, someday the strawbale house will be a reality!
Cheers
