About the humid hides

lanie024 Mar 18, 2005 01:45 PM

The temperature in my tank is the hottest at 80 with the light on... (about a 90 watt) someone told me to put a humid hide in there... will that definatley keep the temp up? My geck is basically staying in his hiding place all day and barley coming out.. i thought that was maybe because it was too cold..

any answers would be greatley appreciated! thankies!

Humid hides don't keep the temperature up, but they do prevent poor shedding. Are you sure the temperature is accurate? It should be at 90 degrees Farenheit. If the temperature is precise, then maybe the tank is in a drafty area? I don't remember if you're someone from another post about temps, but do you have a heat lamp and a UTH?

you want the high temps to be around 90.

First make sure your thermometer is correct, go to wallmart and buy a indoor/outdoor thermometer for about 6$. Before i bought my digi i was using the dial kind that sticks inside the tank, it was 15degrees off! That is a large margin or error that could cause a lot of problems.

If your tank still reads too cold with the digi simply put a higher watt bulb on your tank.

What size tank is it?

Try a 75 or 100watt.

good luck!

I agree, get a reliable thermometer and a higher wattage bulb. You should be alright. Oh, and sorry that I didn't realize you were the same person from below-- There's a few people asking temperature questions right now. ^^

Indoor/Outdoor thermometers ar awesome and very easy. They require one AAA battery (usually) They have a "body" with a digital display of heat, and sometimes humidity, and a long cord with a sensor attached to the end. (the idea is you can mount the thermoeter inside your house and the sensor outside your door, then you can get both outside and inside temps) You can place the sensor anywhere, lay it flat on the substrate to get belly temps or attach it to the glass (usually they have a sticky pad for easy attachment) for the ambient air temps. I prefer to not use the sticky pad as it makes it so you cannot move the sensor around, its nice to be able to put it wherever you want and get a quick temp

Sometimes leos will be shy about eating, but I'm sure once he's al settled in and his temps rise, he'll be coming out more often. Although, sometimes leos like to remain hidden while they eat.. I have one who likes to stay on the inside of one of her cool hides while I drop her food in front of her-- This way she won't have to even budge to get a meal, lol. Lazy I guess, but when she does try eat in front of me she'll scurry into her hide if I move too much, lol.
