MADNORWEGIAN'S PINE SNAKE

MADNORWEGIAN Mar 18, 2005 04:14 PM

My Pine Snake (no name yet) has a light brown speck on his eye. It almost looks like a piece of dirt. He eats on a regular basis and he is just as active as he ever was. He just went into shed mode, so I can't see it anymore, but I'm wondering about this...any clues? Thanks!

Could be nothing or it could be mites. Look at the eyes and see if they look swollen around the outside of the eye. Mites can get behind the eye in the "Ocular". Let the snake crawl through your hands. Close your hand so the snake has to inch along and not glide. Be careful not to grab to tight since it is in shed. Once it crawls all the way through look closely at your hand and check for little bugs crawling on your hand. If it is mites ask someone else how to treat it cuz I will tell you something that is not recomended by some. Look on the rat snake forum about 1/3 of the way down I think for some ideas. Hope its not mites. If it is, then treat all your snakes however you chose to treat them.
Thanks Jason

Thanks for the reply. It's not mites...thankfully! It's some speck of something...possibly substrate or even a loose scale...after the shed, if it is still there I will use mineral oil and a q-tip and try to remove it. Thanks again!!!

Good to hear its not mites. They are a pain. I have got them a few times at shows. About a week after a show some of my snakes that where at one end or the other on the table end up with mites. Funny thing is at one show the guy next to me was selling hooks and swords and crap like that. So I don't think they where from him but all the snakes that where at his end of the table had mites a week later. I think someone looked at a snake on that end after visiting someone elses table that had mites.
Try to get a pic of your pines eye if you can and post it. Maybe someone on hear will know what it is. You can try to soak him/her in water and see if it falls off. Snakes with eye problems usually have bad sheds so soaking is a good idea either way.

That mite situation of yours must have been annoying! I don't have a good camera, so I can't post pictures, but I am soaking him.

Cool give em a good soak and let us know how it works out. Shareing weird problems like that helps all of us learn.
Thanks Jason
