Water QuALITY ??

Niko8 Mar 18, 2005 04:29 PM

Do I have to use filtered water in my vivarium, which has live plants and a White's tree frog?
Is there too much chlorine in tap water? Will this eventually build-up and hurt the frog?
Thanks in advance,
Niko

Bottled spring water or treated tap water can be used. Do not use distilled or plain bottled drinking water. If using tap water, it must be treated with a product which removes chlorines, chloramines, and ammonias. I recommend a product called AmQuel for treating the water. While letting the water sit out open to air for 24 - 48 hours had been accepted as rendering the water safe for use with frogs, few water supples now contain small enough amounts of these chemicals for them to evaporate completely, therefore all tap water should be treated before use.

I'll go against the grain and say that I use tap water. Yes, even for my aquatic amphibs; they are hardier than you may think if taken care of properly. Since your white's isn't aquatic this should be even less of a problem. Now remember this is my opinion and my experience, so take it with a grain of salt like with everyone else

The only thing that I should add is that the tap water quality is best, and safest in any north american city over 200,000. Under that and it is anyone's guess what is in it as far as minerals and oils ect. (A small town near hear sits on top of an oil feild, guess how their water tastes!)

PS. if you really want to know about your water quality just call your local township (or county-something, supposing you dont live in canada) office they can tell you exactly what's in the water.
