Gordon, possible new pogo....pics

cable_hogue Mar 18, 2005 06:34 PM

Hey Gordon,
These guys were on the east end of the Joshua Tree Nat'l park just off the road that breaks off the I10 at Desert Center (middle of nowhere).

Are they pogo's? I have one shot with a P. rugosus worker for an idea of the size. They are no more than 3/8 inch long. Half the size of (bulk) of a small P. Californicus, which were also in the area but much larger than most P. Cali's I've ever seen.

Let me know what you think....

Hey man,

nice ring to it, eh? Whats been going on in the warm desert lately? Found some Chucks and a couple Collared Lizards out, but nothing else too interesting. Hope things are great.
Yo Lou, did you ever come out and look for Uma? Talk to you guys soon.

regards,
-Phil

You crack me up Phil.
I was gone all week in CA so I didn't get much of a chance to get out looking in the good warm weather. Now it looks like rain again. You are getting some yourself eh?
Man, you have to take me chuck hunting one of these days. I have never seen one in the wild.
Cheers!

Hmmmmm, interesting pic. From the pictures it looks as if it might be P. magnacanthus but it is kind of hard to tell. That species is typically a much smaller ant than P. californicus and has distinctly larger eyes. If you still have any specimens you can send me a couple to look at for Id. It is most commonly associated with fine dune type sand but I have seen it in courser wash type sand on occasion.

Hey Gordon,
Did you get the ants? I'm curious to know what they are.
Thanks
