How old are your BD's? As adults I feed mine Rep-Cal Pellets, and give live crickets only every few weeks or so. I give him some Can-O-Crickets every few days as a treat, but wonder even the wisdom of that. I don't understand the obsession people have with insects. A product like Rep Cal has all the protein, minerals and vitamins your adult animal need. Of course fresh veggies are good as well as some insects from time to time, but more as treats, not as a staple diet.

If yours is under a year old, then roaches are a great choice. Second would be crickets. But even then I would introduce them to the Rep-Cal Pellets, and fresh veggies ASAP.

I guess I fall on the other end of the spectrum. I had bearded dragons that where 10 years old and still eating insects on a weekly basis. Back then I wasn't using roaches, but I feed roaches to all my insect eaters now because they are fed a great staple diet everyday. I tend to believe in the wild that beardies are chasing bugs most of their lives, plus it keeps them more active. I think a good mix of bugs, fruits, and veggies is the way to go. Back in the good old days we didn't have can "o" this and that, so I'm not real sure how good those things are. I prefer a bug that I know what I'm feeding it on a daily basis for my pets. Either way roaches, crickets, silkies are good, but I wouldn't use mealworms, pinkies or others but for treats.

Crickets and mealworms should be the main source of animal protein, but they enjoy variety. Mine loved big grasshoppers, moths, roaches, dragonflies, and even spiders. Even if there were crickets in the cage, they would go nuts over something different. NO FIREFLIES. They poisonous to lizards.
