Hey guys, wanted to ask those who raise their own feeder mice a question.

toR038505 Mar 18, 2005 08:55 PM

I just bought a male and female the other day, and i just watched my female die. She was fine then all of the sudden she was on her side, and wasn't moving her back legs. He was like pumping herself, like an accordian. I thought she was having her babies but haven't raised them before so I didn't know. She's dead now, stiff in 3 minutes. She has this white discharge coming out of her.. i am guessing pee hole or something? I'm not sure.. I just wanted to ask everyone if they know what the hell happend. thanks

She probably wasn't pregnant but had an infection of the uterus and what you're seeing is probably the infectious liquid draining. I'd clean everything up... steralize the area and buy a new, younger female. Infections of the uterus are usually confined to retired breeders who are just worn out... Mice are only good for about 6 months of back to back breeding...

Aim not sure if I got this right but"He was like pumping herself, like an accordian." So he was pumping her like an accoridan?"She has this white discharge coming out of her.. I am guessing pee hole or something?"Sounds like a party ta me. They were probly old breeders you should buy younger mice and try that.
OK hope I help OK peace Son of Sam S.

He meant to say "She was pumping herself like an accordion" which means she went into convulsions which is a classic symptom of high temperature and rampant bacterial load...the white discharge is pus.... you wouldn't see ejaculate from a male mouse....the quantity is too small...

Heh, thanks. I bought them from the petstore i get my feeder mice from. I was gonna try to get my own little mouse feeder section goin, guess it failed, heh. High temp? Is it too hot? I haven't checked the temp of the cage yet. Didn't think it mattered with mice. thxs for the help.

Temps can be somewhat important... but that wasn't what I was saying.. convulsion can result from a high fever from the potential infection... environment temps should be between 60 and 75 degrees... comfortable room temp. I was simply addressing the fact that when the body's temp goes up too high.. convulsions result.
