Her tail is going to break...help

IguanaFly Mar 18, 2005 09:17 PM

Our Iguana is pregnant for the third time in her eight-year life. After making her a box of dirt in her cage like we've done in the past, she got turned around and crimped her tail against the side of the box. The crimp/break is about six inches from the base of her tail. There is about a one inch area, where it feels very mushy and where the tissue has torn. There is no break of the skin and she is going to the vet soon. She doesn't appear to be in any pain but I fear she will lose her tail. First of all...owners with pregnant iguanas...learn from our mistake. The box you create MUST be wide enough for her to turn around in without harming her tail. Here are my questions:

A - Will the tail eventually become stiff and just fall off?
B - Is it best to have a vet remove it?
C - She has a splint on it right now...can the tissue ever grow back together?

I'm sure the vet will have the answers, but we're new in the community and I don't know how good the vet will be. I wanted to ask the experts here. Thanks for all your help. Bandito would say thanks too...if she could talk.

OK, I really don't know what to tell you about her tail. We do need to know where you are located so that anyone who is in your area can recommend a good herb vet to you. Good luck I hope everything turns out good for her.

She will lose her tail. That section will die and eventually fall off.

If there is no sign of gangrene id fix her tail with some bandage to support the tail and prevent it from completely breaking off.I have seen some miracles happening with almost broken off legs that healed nicely and are still there. With 9/10 cut off fingers too.

But if she loses part of her tail it will grow again but it will never look nice and will never be long again. The new tail will be shorter than the original one and without scales. Not nice at all! So try to save her tail if you can.
