vet fecal says strange disease are they right?

tourniqet Mar 18, 2005 10:14 PM

I got a fecal done on my beardy, she has been acting very weird. She is very uncoordinated and very small for her age.

They did a fecal and said that she has parasites. I asked what kind and they said "strangles"

I asked him to spell it and he said strangules I think. I have found info on a "strangles" also known as streptococcus equi. It is found in horses... I don't know what to do I can't find any info anywhwere on this disease.

Does anyone know ANYTHING about this?!?!

Could he have meant strongloides?

Hookworms, roundworms and strongyloides are fairly common intestinal nematodes found in bearded dragons. they are not rare or strange and easily treated

Below is a link of a friend of mine doing some surgery on another type of nematode, but there is info their also on other parasites including tghe strongloides.. ang great pics of a surgery removal of worms

that is a great site but I am not sure it is what my beardy has.

It says that the worms are diagnosed by the little pieces of worm poop that come out with the dragon poop. I have been paying close attention to my beardies poop and ther are no little things.

I appreciate the information and the usefull site though

Well from what you wrote I would have to agree with Cheri. Sometimes people abreviate Strongyloides which is a Genus with Strongyles. I think your vet was just trying to say he/she identified it through worms in the feces. What did your vet give you for the worms. Most likely Fenbendazole(Panacur) that is what you treat most worms with except for tapeworms.

yes alpha dragon I think you and cheri are right.

I asked what they would give me for the dragon and he said something probably like Pancur.

They will not give me any drugs for her untill they have seen the lizard, not just a fecal exam...

is there anywhere I can get pancur or something to treat strongliodes on the internet? Just curious.

Thanks for all you help guys

you have to bring the dragon in to the vet, they will weigh her and be able to give a proper dosage.

as was said: the vet needs to know the health of the dragon, it's age, weight etc...

why: when trying to get rid of worms or other parasites you have to in effect "Poison" them.

and as you are giving a toxin to a live animal to much can kill them or create other porblems like liver failure, kidney failure and so forth. no enough and the parasite it not killed and the remaining ones are more able to withstand the poison.

read up on humans who have tuberculosis and fail to take the drugs as the doctor orders them to.

not to say you are trying to do harm, just to explain why you need to work with the vet.

also: cat and dog de-worm meds can have the same issues but most cats and dogs are larger than a dragon by quite a lot and are warm blooded also... makes a big difference.
