Common Snappers Legal in NY?

dressygal Mar 18, 2005 10:18 PM

Hi,

Not sure if anyone remembers me. I have a 2 yr old snapper that I rescued. She was foudn with both front legs torn off and nearly dead and now she is healed and happy and healthy.

BUT I live in Westchester County in NY and I can't find a vet in the area that will treat her. The ones' I have called have all mentioned that she is illegal. Granted these are just vet receptionists but I am so worried that if I take her to a vet in NY she will be taken away.

She is like a family memember now and if it wasn't for me she'd be dead. I would hate to have her confiscated and either put down or stuck in some cage at a zoo. I found a vet in CT that will see her but it is an hour drive to get her there.

Does anyone have a common snapper in the westchester/NYC area that can advise on a local vet? I don't want to lose my baby.

Thanks!

I would take him to the one in CT. NY Laws are quite sketchy and weird...

I live in central NY, and am pretty sure common snappers are not illegal to own. I've looked into laws and believe there are a few species that are illegal. but snappers are not on the list. maybe they have differrent ordinaces in your county? if you want to know more about the laws you can Email me
milkman13114@aol.com just put reptile laws or something in the header good luck

Ouch...both front feet ripped off? Poor baby! I'm not sure of the circumstances, but it's a good thing that you recued her, you have a good heart! Most people would just look the other way! Anyway, if the vets in your area don't even know the legal status of your pet, then it's a sure bet that they won't know how to treat her! Some vets don't know jack when it comes to reptiles (though they will claim that they do.) I'm sure that she means alot to you and if I were you, I'd make the hour trip to the vet where you know she'll be taken care of. Best of luck with her. ~Christy

Thanks for the replies.

I don't want to chance having her taken away so I guess I'll just keep going to the CT vet. However, as one poster pointed out, sometimes I doubt even this vet knows what he is doing. I had to force him to have X-rays taken because I was sure she had swallowed stones and I was right.

Sigh.
