Breeding My Own Mice

BallPython13 Mar 18, 2005 11:58 PM

I am going to get 1.3 mice tommrow, is there a difference between
buying my own rodents or breeding my own rodents??????????? How many babies doe's a female mouse have in one litter???????????? I am going to try to breed my own mice for my ball pythons and hondurans, Cal. kings and rat snakes, I can't breed or feed my rats bacause 1st they are so cute 2nd I all ready have to many rats why because my 4 females got into the males cage and I thought the females are to small to have babies so I put them back in there own cage and Bam 3 weeks later each female had 13 babies WOW so all those rats are our pet rats right know, I thought I could feed my ball pythons the my pet rats when the start dieing off and then I read a post that you are not supost to feed ball pythons rats that eat dog food or red dye in dog food, yes I still feed my rats dog food and seeds. Thanks Scott Glover

well i have good mice breedings in the past. each litter may consist of anywhere from 1-12 or so. but i did have a mouse that once gave me 19 pinkies. i never know mice could produce so many babies. but then the more mice you have, the more babies you'll get. i feed my mice rodent diet blocks from my local pet store. so good luck with your mice breeding. it'll save you lots of money in the long run. even though rats are a much better source of food. but to each their own.

You need to buy just weaned mice to start your colony. Mice apparently have a very complex social system (I think I read even including chemical warfare between the sexes) and you will not likely have good results trying to start a colony with older animals (they will try to kill each other). Also avoid mice that have hunched backs due to having been allowed to dehydrate in transport.
