egg laying medium

verve Mar 19, 2005 12:51 AM

hi
i've read that good egg laying mediums for veiled chameleons are moist sand and sand/peat mixture. however, i've had bad experiences with peat while breeding leopard geckos. eggs laid in peat tend to mold easily. therefore, i need advises from breeder here. can i use vermiculite as a medium, does it facilitate tunneling? or is sand/sand peat mixture needed?
thanks
kyle

Hi, vermiculite or perlite works best. I've used both and had successful eggs hatch out.

All my lizard eggs are layed in moist packed sand. Then I transfer eggs to perlite for incubation. So far, so good. I've used this method for years with no problem.

hi kyle,

my cham has only had infertile clutches (never bred) so I cannot comment on hatching medium, but for laying I use playsand (home depot) and coco-fiber (eco-earth). It holds a tunnel great, the coco-fiber maintains moisture, the fine sand holds.

From the responses so far, I think you have gotten input for laying and hatching medium.
