I posted this earlyer, but with no replies, I need help and any little bit you can hand to me would be appritated. thank you!
Lately, my beardie has been acting up lately. He hates when I clean my cage, change the food, or do anything where my hand, or hands, have to "intrude" into his personal space. As the days go by, his behavior problems, flaring out his beard, going to attack me, and in a few rare cases, bighting the pooper scooper, or whatever it may be in my hand, have been getting worse and worse. When I go to open the top of his cage, he automatically runs as fast as he can to get away from me, and runs his head right into the wall of the cage. I fear that I will never be able to handle him again, and therefore, I feel that I will probably have to get rid of him soon, unless something starts to change. I have tried to earn his trust in me again, by hand feeding mealworms and fruits and veggies to him. He will eat, until my arm or hand twitches, then he flares right back up again, and runs his head into the wall.
This all started about Dec when I left for Christmas and ended up staying for 3 days, due to uncontrollable circumstances. I feed him well, and in fact, give him pinkies as a treat, his favorite food of choice, just in an effort to get him to allow me to handle him again.
I actually take that all back, I bought him a huge 50gal Repti-Keeper as a Christmas present about 3 weeks before I left, and that’s when his behavior problems first started to appear.
I am at a total loss, this is my last ditch effort before my final decision to either replace him, or just get rid of him. I love my beardie with all that I am, and every one around me sees that I am willing to try everything, even putting myself in harm's way. Yes, I said harms way. I swear, he really wants to harm me, or just hates me all together, or is just hungry for human flesh.
Background on Koopa, that’s my beardie....
-Purchased him from a local pet shop that got him, and the rest of his bothers and sisters, from a local breeder.
-Was about 3 months old when I got him.
-Wouldn’t eat fruits and veggies until this last month (don’t know if that is important or not).
-WAS good about putting on his leash, letting me handle him, as well as others.
-Still eats very well, just has an attitude problem.
I suppose that is about it. If anyone has any helpful advice for my beardie and I, please help me out. Like I said, this is my LAST ditch effort before getting rid of him. Please help me out, he is like my baby to me, and I would HATE to get rid of him.
