Breeding Question

hippyguy Mar 19, 2005 06:43 PM

Hey,
My girlfriend has a baby albino banana kingsnke, she wants to get a girl for it, she asked me what kind she should get, i didnt really know what to say. I know about breeding boas and pythons and breeding color morphs as far as them. But with kingsnake what would be the best bet with breeding to an albino banana king, if she bred like the normal black and white king to hers would they turn out DH for both, snows, or like the black and white. I just dont know the kingsnake genetics as well as i do boas and python. Any help would be greatly apreciated. thanks

In my opinion, the possibilities are endless. I have a banana striped coastal phase that I bred to a banded 50/50 coastal and ended up with all kinds of stuff in the SAME clutch (only 10 babies, but 7 different combinations)!!!: 1.Striped yellow/brown, 2.striped white/black, 3.albino yellow/pink striped, 4.albino white/pink striped, 5.banded black/white, 6.banded albino yellow/pink, 7.abberrant black/white sriped. And the surprising thing is, that out of seven different phases hatched, NONE resembled the mother!!! Genetics works in interesting ways. I guess that the parents, which I got from two different people must have been het for all kinds of things, lol!
But honestly, a guy named "Kerby" is more of an expert on Cal Kings than I am. I'm primarily an eastern & goini guy myself and don't focus too much on cal kings. The ones I do have were given to me and I just sorta grew fond of them. . .

It sounds like both of your cal kings were het for albinism. When you breed any aberrancy into a banded you will get a bunch of STUFF! And most of the time it can't be predictable. Which makes egg hatching time seem like Christmas.

The only het gene you have in your scenario is albinism. Aberrancy & striped is not recessive in cal kings.

You should have fun doing that same pair this year to see how similar/or not this year's hatchlings will be.

Let us know.

With pics of course.

I have to admit, I WAS surprised by the babies I got last year and AM looking forward to breeding them again this year. I will post pics of the little ones as soon as they "arrive"

First what you have is an albino cal king. I would drop the "banana" part.

**But with kingsnake what would be the best bet with breeding to an albino banana king, if she bred like the normal black and white king to hers would they turn out DH for both, snows, or like the black and white.**

Your albino will change as it gets older and will probably turn into a white cal king with yellow bands. If it wasn't albino it would be black/brown with cream/yellow bands. So breeding a normal black and white like you suggested would produce babies that are 100% het for albinism and would more than likely be banded with maybe a little aberrancy (since I can't see the whole snake's pattern). You will probably loose the white in the babies and get mostly cream/yellow bands. There is no such thing as a "snow" cal king. Snow is a product of two recessive genes at the same time (anery & amel). As far as I know there aren't any anery cal kings, hence no snow cal kings. The term "snow" in cal kings is incorrect.

hey
The only reason I called it a banana was the guy i bought it from at the show called it that. Also the picture below was takin at a reptile show the person who owned it said it was a snow kingsnake, had it priced at 150. So i just assumed if he had one maybe my g/f could breed them, because she really liked it. So are you saying i should breed it to a albino just like the male? thanks

That cal king is called a Blizzard, displaying two recessive genes at the same time (albinism and melanism).

Melanism being Davis, Mendota, Baja, etc...

**So are you saying i should breed it to a albino just like the male?**

If you want albinos, then you can breed albino x albino = all albinos.

If you breed an albino to a Blizzard you will get all albinos that are 100% het for melanism.

Straight out of the egg, nice and pink, will turn to white as they get older.
