digging dragon

tkatchev69 Mar 19, 2005 06:48 PM

Hello all,
I have two dragons, and one of them has started just digging like crazy. I had been pretty sure it was a male, until the digging, and I thought about the whole egg laying ritual. Does anyone else's dragon dig for fun by chance? Or is it something they're known to do on occassion? Thanks.
Dan

My daughter's dragon used to dig frequently as a juvie, here and there, but I would say that a sudden interest in digging in a CWD old enough to be gravid should be taken as a possible signal before oviposit. If you have suitable substrate in your set-up to satisfy her egg laying requirements then you don't need to add anything further. I went ahead and added an egg-laying box to my enclosure just because it would be so much easier if she would just lay them in there-however, mine has expressed no interest in digging in the box-right now she's digging UNDER it. LOL Mine has been digging for several weeks now, so the ovipositting will not happen overnight. Good luck!

Definitely egg laying behavor. Check her stomach on the sides, gently pinch between your fore finger and thumb you should feel some very smooth oval objects. They are very sneaky about egg laying, they will leave several dummy holes to through you off the actually location will be filled in and blended in so well you won't have a clue. I usually make a checkered pattern with a stick on the surface of the dirt so I can tell when they've fill one in. Feeling the sides and noticing that the lumps are gone, is usually the first sign you'll notice.
