Tail nip?? help please.....

kevinBD1 Mar 19, 2005 07:01 PM

I got/rescued a new savannah monitor today, and and just a little while ago i had her out and i noticed that she had a small portion of her tail (about 1-1.5cm long) that looked like the circulation was cut off, due to improper shedding i'm guessing. There was a little bit of dry blood and scabbing, but the dead piece has not fallen off. And there is also another portion of the tail just below that, that also looks smaller, like the same thing may be happening to it. What do I need to do??

Hi Kevin,
Did you get it at the Dixie Show today? I saw some some poor looking critters there. Most were in good shape, but imports are stressed and things tend to happen.
The best thing you can do is just treat it like you would a regular sav. Keep it away from the rest of your lizards and make sure it's hydrated and has good temps.
Give it the proper treatment and it will heal itself.

NO NO NO lol I got this one from a pet store here in Gadsden, the monitor is in EXCELLENT health, bright eyes, great weight, and i have had my eye on it at the pet store for about a month and she is an eating machine, the only problem was the cage, Calci sand for substrate, no hide, u get the drift. But now i have her in a cage w/ about a 1 foot layer of cypress mulch, a hide, and basking spot, lol all of that good stuff. Is it normal for new arrivals to not bask for a couple of days when u first get them??

Yea, they do that. I blame it on the stress of the move.
I put new critters in a quiet place (hard to find one with kids running around)and leave it alone for the first 2 weeks.
All I do is offer food and change the water.
Does this make 2 savs now? Maybe you'll get lucky and end up with a pair.

I actually made a trade. I gave my smaller more agressive male for a much larger and sweeter female. The girl i know at the pet store said she knew of someone that wanted one to use later for breeding, and wasnt planning on much handling, so i gladly made the trade lol. Do you have savannahs?? can u post a few pics??

I had 4 savs, one died, I traded a pair for an argus so I had one. Now I have 2. I was given a baby at the show yesterday.
Well, I kind of paid for it. I cuaght an evil, escaped rhino iguana for a vender I know. These kids he had helping him were afraid to touch it when it started tailwhipping and gaping.
I got scratched up, but I'll live.
Here's the newest one.

Sassy. I will try to get new pics of her, she's a great little lizard. She's so calm. I have to wait til she comes out of her burrow to take a new pic.

Is that a fake log or a real one? And how big is that sucker?

kap10cavy Mar 20, 2005 07:36 PM

That is driftwood. It's not hard to find when you live close to the river. That is an old pic. She was around 20 inches then, not that much bigger now.
