Breeding Veilds?

ky Mar 19, 2005 10:17 PM

I recently aquired a pair of adult veilds. I would like to breed them but I know nothing about chams. I have bred bearded dragons, boas, and colubrids. Any help would be wonderful.

Thanks,
Brian S

Generally you introduce the female into the males enclosure. You will know if the female is receptive as she will display a robin's egg blue (This is not always so, therefore you may just have to show her to the male and see how she reacts, trial and error). If she is recpetive, she will be "tame"/submissive, when my females are receptive, they show the blue and when I go to take them out of their enclosure (to transport to the males enclosure), they do not try to bite, which is very odd for a veiled. Other than recognizing when the females are receptive, there is really nothing to breeding them. You put the female in with the male, and in my experience there is virtually no courting, as the male just rushes the females and copulates. I keep them together for a day and a half or so, and keep a very close eye on them, as things can turn violent fast. The female will let you know when the matings done. She will show her gravid coloration, a black, with orange "bands" and sone blue dots. Then you separate them, and provide the female with plenty of calcium to develope the eggs, and plenty of food to help produce healthy, viable eggs. I hope this helps some. Good luck.
