Uroplatus viv waterfall

jmorris Mar 19, 2005 10:56 PM

Some of you may remember me posting some pics of my U. henkeli viv about 6 months ago, and promising that I'd post some pics of the watefall when I got it working right... Well, School, work, lazyness, and disapointment kept me from fixing it for some time, but Ifinished it yesterday.

I had some issues with sealing off the reseroir area from the rest of the viv, and i had to reenginer the rock work three times to get less splashing on the glass, but it's as good as I'd ever hoped now, and I'm loving it. Only time will tell if Kurt, the gecko, will apreciate it as much as I do.

Jared.

What is the water reservoir at the bottom made of?

All the rock work is actually... real rock. I can't remember what variaty the rock-yard employee called it, but it's texture and color was perfect for my application. Granted, it adds about 80lbs to the viv, but I like the way it looks. I used an expanding foam product made for pond/water feature aplications in the koi hobby to hold the rocks together, and fill the gaps. I had to re-seal all the seams with silicone due to those leaks I mentioned, and I coated the silicone with either milled peat or long fibered sphagnum while it was still tacky to get the nice brown and mossy looks in the cracks.

I remember that cage. In fact I tried to find your post in the search engine just last week to see what kind of epoxy you used.

It was the Sweetwater product, correct? How is that holding up?

Yes, Sweetwater Epoxy from aquaticecosystems.com

It's held up great, even with me setting up all the abrasive rock work. Wonderful product in my opinion.

Thanks, Jared

Couple of questions re. the epoxy.

How many coats did you put on?

How many sq. ft. did you cover?

How much epoxy did you use?

Thanks again.

I used one gallon of epoxy to cover about 21 square feet with 3 even coats (not too thin or too thick).
