heating a wooden vivarium

gary1 Jul 09, 2003 08:41 AM

someone i know recently left the country and we bought their bearded dragon and got their spare viv as well.
i was thinking about relocating my corn snake to this new viv as its a little (not much tho) bigger than the one its in currently.

the one he's in at the moment is a glass tank with sliding doors which is easy to heat with a normal heat mat. we picked up the other viv last night and i was contemplating how to heat it. the underneath of the viv is a fairly thick peice of wood and i didnt think the heat would penetrate this and the substrate very well.

the back panel is a thin peice of plywood so i suppose i could put the heatmat here but would the heat coming through the back wall rather than underneath make much differance to my snake ?
the way the old owner had it set up was with the heat mat actually inside the tank. is this ok ? thought it might be a bit dangerous to the animal kept inside

any thoughts or examples of how people heat their wooden vivariums would be greatly apreciated.

I have an all wood vivarium and i use the heat matt on the inside. Its taped to the floor at one side and is thermostatically controlled. The heat matt is covered with wood chippings and there are stones , ceramic flowerpots and a large log located on top of the chippings. It looks nice and the temperature is good, plus the snakes cant get at it or disturb it so there is no problem there
The only thing to watch out for is that the chippings are not that deep that no heat gets through.

I can't help you with the heating factor, but I just wanted to warn you to REALLY clean that cage out well, especially since it's wooden. You wouldn't want to get your snake sick or have it get mites or anything if the cage isn't cleaned well enough.
