weight gain question

RedQuake Jul 09, 2003 08:44 AM

Hi all,

I would like to know how long it has taken your geckos to reach weights of over 30 grams and how much they ate per day.

Sadly my leo is only 9 grams but since starting the antibiotic he seems to be improving...He's drinking alot more and taking crickets again but only a few at a time. I'm going to offer silkworms and waxies to see if he'll eat more of them than he has crickets.

I'm looking for statistical info, like if he eats this many items per day he should gain this much weight in this much time, type of thing. I realize that different food items will provide differing amounts of fat so a general rule of thumb is all i want so i can monitor his progress.

Thanks in advance
Red

Well I cant speak for everyone else, but with my experince. My male winky started out only gaining a few grams every few weeks, but he slowley started to pick up his eating habits and now is doing great he is 28.5 grams right now and he is 6 months old. I am not sure if that is bad or good, but aslong as he is gaining weight now i am happy. Do you have a large leo? or still a baby? You might want to tr butterworms, my leo loves them and are great for calicium and protein. I hope that helps. Just give it time it was sick and will begin to eat more with time.

Thankyou I got him as a baby but that was back in March and i've seen pics of leos hatched in March that are HUGE compared to mine. He did get sick but from what we don't know. All i know now is that he's eating again, more active than he ever was, and is starting to look better! I expect it'll take him a long time to fully recover and look like the geckos i've seen posted in here but i am more confident now that it will happen. I just got home from the local reptile specialty store where i'd hoped to pick up some silk or wax worms but they were all out I'll keep my eyes open for butterworms, though everywhere i've been i haven't ever seen them.

Thanks again for your post

You might want to try www.herpfood.com They have a wide variety of food there that is great for leos. The good part about them too is that you dont have to by a lot of food like 100 silk worms or butterworms at a time. I got 25 butterworms for $6.99 and 25 silk worms for $5.99 and they are very quick. You might want to try there because usually pet stores dont carry anyting besides mealies and crix. Wish you the best.
