how do you tell the sex of a snake?

Very carefully. I believe popping is the best way for young snakes, And probing after they have some bulk to them. I dont recommend anyone new to the hobby try either. Go to a reptile show or a qualified herp vet and watch someone else do it before you attempt it yourself. Also you can check out a local herp society if there are any near you. Both are relatively easy once you have done it a few times. Tail sexing is another way, but I have been wrong at guessing this way more than once. If you post some closeups of your snakes tail from some different angles, there are many experienced people on this site who will take educated guesses for you.
