Arboreal salamanders make excellent captives, as do many of the species of Aneides. A 10 gallon aquarium is perfect for a pair of these animals. I have always used plain moistened paper towels as a sustrate for my salamanders. Though many people find this substrate boring, it is ideal in that it shows the buildup of wastes within the enclosure. These animals do however enjoy climbing, and it is not a bad idea to provide them with some branches from their native habitat. They do fine on dusted crickets; I have now had mine for almost 8 years!
It is getting to be the end of the season for lugubris, but you may still be able to find a few individuals. They are quite common in the central coast area (I live in Santa Cruz, CA), and I have found them at lower elevations in the Sierras as well. I know their range extends to southern CA, but I have not looked for them outside of the two areas mentioned earlier.
Hope this helps!
thanks for the info, im going to san fransisco this weekend and ill try to find some the last time i went i found my black salamander.
Here's one I found underneath a piece of plywood in the woods in the Monterey area. I never tried keeping these as pets, but I imagine they're pretty hardy.
The are some additional salamander pics from this herping trip to California on my website.
