Rescue Update: Some good news

Gmagecko Mar 20, 2005 12:24 PM

Well 3 of the 4 are trying to eat! We foung pin head crickets and they are trying! One is quite happy to have them. We actually removed him/her because he had 3 and I didnt want him to overload w/ the first feeding. The other 2 had 2 each.Unfortunately, one still won't eat.S/He is actually afraid of the crickets. It runs away when they get near him/her.Yes I tried to pull the jump legs off...but ended up killing more crickets then I got legs off! LOL.They are tiny little things!I mashed up some wax worms(very nasty work!!) and a few drops of Ensure and rubbed it on it's snout. It was really pissed and hissed at me...kind of cute really! I stopped "holding" it and let it pearch on my finger and tried again...that worked better. We sat for about 30 minutes and s/he licked the mix a little at a time. Not a full feeding...but a start! We have a vet visit on Wed (couldnt get in any sooner)but we do have concerns for one's eye.It is either deformed or there is shed stuck on the lower lid. We'll have to see.

Pinheads are very small, I don't even give hatchlings pinheads.
Seriously mealworms are healthier then waxworms and I have never had a problem with any gecko and mealworms. I start all my hatchings on mealworms about 3 days after they hatch. I also don't give them waxworms till they are much older.

My hatchling fattails start on crickets and I use the regular small size, they show more of an interst when the prey is a bigger.

i just think you may have better luck getting them to eat on there own useing proper siz prey items.

I got the pin heads only because the small crickets from our petstore seemed to big. These little guys are only 2.3g to 2.7g.and 2 1/2 to 3 inches long.I tried every store w/in an hour drive to find mini mealies and about an inch was the smallest.I ordered mini's on-line and should have them Tues AM thanks to Overnight delivery.I feed all our geckos mealies and they love them (we have 4 adults,1 male & 3 female).I also prefer mealies to cricket...to many escape-ees with crickets. I figured since we found them in the garbage in a box filled w/ veggies...they needed something till the mealies get here!I doubt they have seen any "proper Food" since hatching!
