What do I do for a broken leg?

reamk924 Mar 20, 2005 02:06 PM

I think my beardie has a broken leg. She is dragging her front right leg around and not putting weight on it. I know I need to take her to the vet, but what do they usually do with broken legs?

A broken leg needs vet attention if you want it to have the best chance of healing properly. An experienced vet will know exactly how to set the injury--tape it up---so it has the best chance of healing correctly.

An improperly set leg WILL result in permanent disability and possibly serious infection.

Until you can get to a vet you can use tape and gauze to help support the leg--placing it closer to the body so it will not be further damaged.

Some experienced breeders have learned enough from their many vet visits to set their own beardies' injuries. Please DO NOT try to do this yourself.

A vet visit is in order, a broken limb qualifies as an emergency at a vts office and you should be able to get in the day you call. A vet will be able to treat and set the leg and also look into causes of the break. For example, beardies with MBD have weaker bones that fracture more easily.

Good luck!
