Catch of the Day....Happy Spring

phobos Mar 20, 2005 03:42 PM

Found this Canebreak today in Oceola National Forest. She is one of the VERY Neurotoxic group that is know at this local. The venom is very potient causing circulatory & respiratory collapse in a s little as 10 mins, as someone who I know told me from experience.

I left her un-disturbed to enjoy the spring sun..

Please take only pictures...leave only footprints.

Enjoy,

Al

...Al mentioned the neurotoxic effects of the locality he's at, and i noticed there's a marked difference in the amount of pigment of the postocular stripes. There were several papers done on the purpose of this stripe as a proector against UV from sunlight, and how it breaks down venom. I'm wondering if the differences in color attribute to the venom toxicity and properties.

My only canebrake is cb from S. Carolina parents and she's got jet black postocular stripes.

Matt:

I have the GPS location of this spot, but gennerally it just south east of the intersection of I-10 and "forest road 250", that crosses I-10. Road 250 is the Eastern most one of two that crosses I-10. I'll show you when I see you.

Cheers!

Al
